Where to Find the Best Deals on Cheap Hotels

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are many things to consider when planning a trip. There is the mode of transportation, meals and most importantly, lodging. This can factor in largely when taking a family vacation and the need to house more than just one person arises. By going online and doing a quick search, you can find some great deals on cheap hotels.

There are a multitude of websites online that offer discounts and specials at cheap hotels all over the world. The one you choose largely depends on where you are going and how close you want to be to the local attractions. Many of these hotels are not only low priced but offer many of the same amenities as their high priced cousins.

The largest discounts may be found for extended stays such as a week or more. The overnight reservations tend to be around the same rate but when staying multiple days, hotels invariably offer some type of special rate. This rate can be even lower if the stay takes place during the week rather than on a weekend.

There are cheap hotels listed all over the Internet with their own websites, but it may be more prudent to look over a booking website. These sites can offer different rates from various hotels all in the same area and normally have a description as to what the hotel itself and the area have to offer. This allows for very easy comparison shopping when planning a business trip or vacation.

The booking websites will also have their own discounts and specials that are only available if you reserve the room through the. For people who travel quite a bit, these websites will offer discounts such as booking five nights through them and getting a free nights stay at a hotel of your choice. This works in the same way frequent flier miles do for an airline.

The Internet has made it quite easy for you to be your own travel agent and find the best deals on cheap hotels for you and your family. This allows more money to be saved and used towards more important things such as the family day at the amusement park or dinner out on that romantic weekend away from the children. There are many of these hotels that offer weekend getaway packages at a reduced rate also.

Just because cheap hotels are being looked at does not mean anything has to be sacrificed in terms of service or quality. There are many very reputable hotels online with ratings from travelers groups and patrons who have stayed there multiple times. These may all be browsed on their websites and websites of some consumer groups too.

By taking a little time while planning your trip to look over what is being offered online, you can save quite a bit of money and get exactly the type of room desired. All this may be accomplished in a short period of time, right from the comfort of your own home. This in and of itself makes the idea of taking a trip that much more enjoyable.

Top 10 National Parks of Thailand

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Thailand encompasses an array of national parks and wonderful landscapes that go from the mountainous north right down to the myriad islands in the Thai Gulf and Andaman region. There are 79 national parks in all, covering all areas of the country and although fees for foreigners are steep, most people are blown away by the beauty.

1. Khao Yai National Park

One of Thailand's very best, Khao Yai National Park is massive and resides to the northeast of Bangkok. It is the country's oldest national park and comes with 500kms of hiking trails, huge waterfalls, pristine forest and around 300 species of birds alone. Elephants and tigers are among the big animals here.

2. Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand's most visited. Despite its remote nature it is wholly accessible by bus on the slow road between Surat Thani and Phuket. Khao Sok has a whacking great lake in the middle, stretching for over 50kms across, which supports vast numbers of fish and ecosystems. There are deep caves connected to the lake that are viewable outside of the wet season.

Elsewhere in the park is some good trekking from the headquarters and a pretty gorge to swim in. Keep an eye out for wildlife if you go for an extended trek. You are unlikely going to see tigers, yet there are all sorts of wonderful creatures to spot. A number of well done guesthouse operations are at the park entrance.

3. Phang Nga Bay National Park

Phang Nga Bay National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world for lovers of water and islands. It has a stark karst land and seascape, which features hue pillars poking up out of the ground and water. There are caves, traditional villages and lush foliage galore here and it is only 100kms from Phuket Town. The kayaking in Phang Nga Bay National Park is particularly good.

4. Ang Thong National Marine Park

Ang Thong is a dreamy archipelago between Koh Samui and Surat Thani. It is rarely visited on the order of Thailand's main parks due to the general inaccessibility. Tours from Samui are popular and often incorporate kayaking around the many bays. You can trek to the top of some of the islands and also camp out near the park headquarters.

5. Erawan National Park

Kanchanaburi's most famous park features the stunning Erawan Falls, a huge cascade of water over seven tiers down 1,500m. Visitors can swim in the pools as well as walk up the trail which skirts the falls. The rest of the park has good walking and a collection of caves, including Phrathat Cave. This park gets really busy during holidays.

7. Doi Inthanon National Park

Thailand's highest national park reaches a point of over 2,560m above sea level. The mountain itself is fairly unremarkable on its peak, however, as you can only go so far due to the research station there. On the drive up the mountain are the King and Queen's stupas, while on the flanks are huge waterfalls and a degree of accommodation.

Lesser Visited Thai National Parks

8. Mu Koh Surin

Often referred to as simply Surin National Park, this northern park straddles the Thai/Burma border down on the Andaman Sea. Most of the park's territory covers the sea where there are five main islands, including North Island, South Island and three smaller ones. The snorkeling here is superb.

9. Tarutao

This largely unseen area of Thailand resides right down in the south and up against Malay territory. It encompasses dozens of islands in Satun province and includes the busiest island, Koh Lipe. You can also stay on Koh Tarutao and Koh Adang. The snorkeling, amazing sunsets and quietness are the big deal here.

10. Ko Samet

Although Koh Samet is a high profile place that sees a huge number of tourists, most come here for the beaches and not for its marine park status. It sits down in Rayong province, not far south of rowdy Pattaya, and is accessible by ferry only. Koh Samet is only a few kilometers long but is pretty rugged. It sports amazing coral and beaches that are incredibly white and the driest climate in the country.

Park Fees

Most parks charge fees to enter and sometimes as much as 400 baht for the higher profile ones. It may not sound much, but considering most Thais only earn 200 baht a day and also only have to pay 20 baht to get in, it is.

Scuba Diving & Vacationing in Sunny Southern California

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Sunshine and fun is what California in is all about. This Pacific Sea washed state was one of the last to be absorbed into the union, but shortly became one of the first on the list for travel and vacation entertainment. It shone bright with so many stars when Hollywood opened its gates. And talking about gates, was famous for its inventive strategies in construction when it built the Golden Gate Bridge.

And it was Walt Disney's choice when he made a decision to build the most happy place on the planet, making Disneyland. It is straightforward to travel up and down the whole California shore with an amazing automobile rental from any of the airfield locations, visiting museums, natural parks and other theme parks, making your California waking dream. L.A.

Sunny Los Angeles

Generates with Excitement, LA or as some call it ' The City of The Angels' is saturated with all types of entertainment. The 1st stop is generally Hollywood Boulevard to the Walk of celebrity where you can see whose hand and footprints have a likeness to yours while visiting the Kodak Theatre, renowned for the Oscar parties. And if your are fortunate, you could share a fitting room with somebody famous as you go shopping on Rodeo Drive in the Beverly Hills area, at Santa Monica Square or on Hollywood Drive. All this excitement and its hasn't even cost a penny! Not so far outside of LA, in Anaheim, you will find the 'Happiest Place on Earth' which everybody knows is Disneyland. I went there thinking that I'd be trailing around after my kids while they lived the vision of their lives, but I'm able to assure you that I was more excited and enthused than my children.

On the Scuba Diving Front

Scuba Diving in the Pacific Ocean is DIFFERENT than any diving anywhere else in the world.  The water is cold and wetsuits/drysuits are worn.  The life underwater has huge diversity as cold water spawns kelp reefs where different species are plentiful. We have the mecca of cold water diving out here in Casino Point, of Santa Catalina Island.

Crossing California to San Francisco but if you need to get a good grip on California, then let's go down to the Pacific Sea and over to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. One thing is to stand at a distance and admire its greatness but the best is to be a part of it. But San Francisco would not be ideal without a trip to the Island of Alcatraz and its piercing jail and museum stuffed with shivering history. Everything about California makes you tingle!

I Love Italian Travel - The Marches Carnevale Season

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Marches main Carnevale is held in Ascoli Piceno, a valley town of about 55 thousand surrounded by mountains on three sides. It is located about 110 miles (175 kilometers) southeast of Perugia, the capital of the neighboring region of Umbria. According to local legend Ascoli Piceno was founded when a woodpecker led a band of nomadic shepherds to the sliver of land in between two rivers on which the town now stands. So you may want to look for woodpecker masks at Carnevale. Most of the action takes place in the Piazza del Populo (Square of the People) that is richly decorated for the festivities.

This Carnevale has quite a set of characters. The procession is opened by a town crier, the Grand Georges. You will find the Grosse Biesse (the Fat Beast), which is about 20 yards or meters long. This beast weighs more than 13 tons and sports a long pointed tail, a crocodile's head, scales, a long neck, and large teeth. Grosse Biesse is dragon-like creature with a crested back and spits, not fire but confetti. It is accompanied by about fifty "biessons" (beasties). Tradition has it that trolls once lived in nearby caves and when frightened by the Fat Beast they invaded the town. Luckily enough Nos Petite (Our Little One) was able to make peace among the trolls, the Fat Beast, and the local populace. We could use his negotiating skills today. Then there is the puppet Gugusse, a cheery little fellow who is constantly placed on a tarpaulin and thrown in the air. When he isn't around, people from the crowd, mostly women, get to replace him. I am not sure if they are volunteers or not.

Other Carnevale participants include The Haute Cour marchoise, the Macrales de la Famenne, the Diables de la Famenne, the Balouches di Morloye, the Zibistoukets and Grutchouyoux, the gilles Les Bons Vivants, the Porte Basse, the Harmonie Communale, and the Amis de Theo. Did you notice that all the names are in French? You can get an idea of this Carnevale's size by considering the statistics for the final Sunday: 1.5 tons of confetti, 1,300 lbs of candy, 4000 flowers and 16,000 oranges are distributed or thrown to the crowd.

The Marches hosts additional Carnevales. Fano is a seaside resort of over 60 thousand people. The highlight of its Carnevale is the parade in which costumed revelers throw candies and chocolate. The town of Offida, population about five thousand, is situated about 8 miles (12 kilometers) northeast Ascoli Piceno. The central attraction of Offida's Carnevale is the Corsa del Bove Finto (Running of the Fake Bull) in which after spending the day drinking local wine, traditionally dressed participants run after someone in a bull costume.

From Bangkok to Pattaya by Bus

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Bangkok is a bustling city like New York, Tokyo and London. It can be a confusing place to get around.

I'll show you how to get from Bangkok to Pattaya by bus for only a few dollars. It's easy and will save
you time and money.

First of all, Bangkok is the capital city in Thailand. The Thais refer to it as "Krung Thep". Bangkok is a sprawling city that is hard to get around if you don't know what you're doing. A good map of the city is a good idea to keep handy.

Pattaya is a seaside resort about two hour and 15 minutes from Bangkok. It is a resort that started as a GI
R & R getaway during the Vietnam war. It has a "infamous" reputation that mostly lives up to its' famous moniker of "sin city". But, Pattaya is getting a makeover and is quickly starting to change it's image. There are more family oriented venues and attractions popping up every day. In fact, there is now a Russian circus that is very entertaining and a good evening out for anyone regardless of age.

There are plenty of activities to be had that don't involve the famous nightlife. There are some high-end
resort that cater to your every need. You can have a day at the spa and a massage or relax at the beach if that's what you choose.

There are several ways to get to Pattaya from Bangkok. You can take a taxi from anywhere in the city and it will cost you around 1,000 baht to 1,500 baht depending on what you negotiate. It pretty simple and straight forward, but definitely negotiate a price before you leave.

A bus is the cheapest way to go and will cost you between 113 baht and 120 baht depending on where you catch it. There are bus stations at Ekamai, Mor Chit and Bang Na.

Ekamai Bus Station is the most convenient station since it's located next to the BTS(locally referred to as the "sky train") station at Ekamai. The fare is 113 baht

Bang Na is the newest station on the Pattaya route but isn't conveniently accessible except by taxi. The fare from Bang Na is 113 baht. The fare from Mor Chit is 120 baht.

Happy travels and Sawatdee Kup.

Top 5 Things to Do in Florence Italy

Image : http://www.flickr.com

A visit to the beautiful city of Florence is a must for anyone taking a tour of Italy. Florence is a melting pot of culture and history and has a wide range of world class art galleries and museums. Even if you are not a museum lover, just taking a walk through the center of Florence, and taking in the stunning architecture can be very enjoyable.

Whether you are in Florence for a day or for a week, there are some things that you cannot afford to miss.

1. The Duomo - Florence's cathedral is easy to spot with its huge terracotta colored dome. It is one of Florence's most distinctive sights and is the result of years of work spanning six centuries. Arrive early to miss the crowds and if you have the energy you can climb the 463 steps to the top of the cupola and be rewarded by a fantastic view over the city. Alternatively climb the 414 steps up to the top of the bell tower for a slightly different view.

2. The Uffizi - This is one of the most popular museums in Florence and a must for art lovers. The Uffizi is home to the finest collection of Renaissance paintings in the world and boasts around 1700 paintings and 300 sculptures, as well as a number of tapestries and other artifacts. There are 45 rooms containing works from famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci , Michelangelo, Botticelli, Dante, Titian and Rubens.

3. The Palazzo della Signoria - this lively square has lots of restaurants, bars and ice cream shops and is a great place to stop for a rest in an open air cafe. The square has been the political center of Florence for centuries and is dominated by the Palazzo Vecchio with a copy of the statue of David by Michelangelo in front of the palace. Right next to the Piazza della Signoria is the promenade Via dei Calzaiuoli, a lively shopping street, connecting with the Duomo of Florence - a popular place in the evenings with locals and visitors alike. During the summer you can go on a romantic carriage ride through Florence, beginning in Piazza della Signoria.

4. Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardens - This palace is a magnificent building and houses lots of interesting galleries and museums. It is also the entrance to the Boboli Gardens, which is a relaxing place to go to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is filled with statues and fountains and if you can make it all the way to the top of the hill, some beautiful views of Florence.

5. A wander along the Arno and over the Ponte Vecchio - A walk along the river Arno is a great way to end your day of sightseeing. The Ponte Vecchio crosses the River Arno and houses many goldsmiths, jeweler's shops and medieval workshops that overhang the bridge. The best time to view the bridge is at sunset, followed by a walk along the bridge after dusk, when the lights on the bridge reflect on the River Arno and everything seems almost magical.

Planning Your European Vacation

Image : http://www.flickr.com

While a lot of people choose to visit Europe using a group tour, that doesn't mean that this is the best choice for you! In fact, individuals and families who plan their own European vacations often report that they wouldn't have it any other way. In addition to the benefits of being in control of your own schedule and activities, planning your own European vacation also means that you will save quite a bit of money. However, the key to a successful European vacation is all in the planning. The more you can plan, the more likely you are to have an enjoyable and trouble free stay.

Start Planning

Once you decide that you are going to go to Europe, you should start your vacation planning at least six months in advance. This planning should consist of first choosing a destination and a length of your stay. Once this is determined, immerse yourself in a guidebook or travel website with information about where you will be staying. This is also the best time to start researching different hotels and secure your reservation. If you are feeling even more outgoing, you might even want to start learning the basics of the language of the area where you will be visiting. Six months is plenty of time to learn some conversation basics!

Airfare and Passports

Purchasing your airfare is something that you should take care of about three months in advance of your travel date. When you purchase a few months in advance, you are more likely to get the best deals. Plus, you will have better options when it comes to direct flights and flight times. If you don't already have a passport, now is the time to apply. Without this important document your vacation will never even get started!

Transportation

Once the larger tasks are crossed off of your to-do list, you can start concentrating on the smaller items, such as how you will travel when you get to Europe. You can rent a car or take public transportation, but these arrangements are best made before you leave. Beyond this type of transportation, you will also be doing a lot of walking while you are in Europe. This means that if you don't have a comfortable, sturdy pair of shoes, now is the time to go shopping. Look at the weather forecast and try to determine the type of weather that you will be experiences. If you need any additional items, it is much cheaper to purchase them now and then take them with you rather than try to buy them while you're on vacation.

Other Items to Think About

Before you leave, you also need to determine how you will carry your money. One of the most secure ways to travel is to take traveler's checks. These checks can be replaced in case you run into trouble and lose them. Make sure that you only take the checks and credit cards that you must have; don't take additional cards that could be easily stolen or lost.

Pack your bags a few days before you leave so you have time to remember items that may have been overlooked. Some people find that it is helpful to write a list of items that need to be packed and then check off the list as each item is placed in your suitcase.

Most important: Get ready to have fun! All of this planning was done to make sure that you have a great vacation, so get ready to enjoy yourself!

Lets Talk About Facilities of Pattaya Hotels

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are many options for facilities in Pattaya hotels. From oversized swimming pools to world class golf courses, you can find the luxury resort of your dreams in the hotels of this resort city. Whether you are looking for a 5 star hotel or budget lodgings, you will be pleased with the facilities available.

Located on the scenic Gulf of Siam in Thailand, Pattaya offers beautiful beaches, historic locations, and total immersion into the exotic Thai culture. Three different beaches offer visitors unique opportunities for fun and relaxation.

Pattaya boasts several 5 star hotels that have very distinct facilities. Though they all offer luxurious, spacious rooms, swimming pools, restaurants, bars, workout facilities and wonderful hospitality, each different hotel has its own unique character and facilities.

The Tim Boutique Hotel is a family business in the heart of Pattaya. The owner of the Tim Boutique is something of a regional legend who owned and operated a billiard hall and bar in the area for nearly 30 years. When she shifted into the hotel business she went all out with modern stylings and up to date features like broadband wireless connections for all guests. Though the Tim Boutique feels upscale, it is very reasonably priced.

The Baron Beach Hotel is perfect for someone who wants to experience the central Pattaya beach up close. It features comfortable, modern amenities. Impressionist art is scattered throughout the hotel and gives the building a very contemporary feel. The Baron Beach Hotel is right in the heart of many of the most visited attractions in the Pattaya beach district, and is in walking distance of great shopping and dining. The real beauty of this hotel is its proximity to the beach - in just a short walk you will find yourself lying in the sand or playing in the surf.

In southern Pattaya you will find the Nova Platinum Hotel. This four star resort offers modern rooms that have been updated with flatscreen televisions, DVD players, and free wireless internet access for all guests. The Zia Restaurant offers Mediterranean and Asian cuisine that is influenced by the local favorites. Guests will appreciate the fun and convenience of a bar located in the pool.

One of the more interesting hotels in Pattaya is the Ibis Pattaya. Its central location gives guests quick access to the best shopping and night life in the Pattaya beach area, and is just a few steps from the beach. Guests will enjoy the many entertaining elements of Pattaya during the day and night, and have easy access to places like the Pattaya Elephant Village, Underwater World Pattaya, or the Pattaya Park Tower.

Where to Stay in Pattaya Thailand

Pattaya Thailand is located on the southern coast of Thailand. Just a few hours away from Bangkok by taxi and it is as easily accessible by taxi from Suvarnabhumi airport. The taxi drivers will charge you a flat fee of 1500THB to 2000THB which is roughly $45US to $60US. If you can speak a little bit of Thai than you will have a good chance of bargaining the price down. Taxis can be found at the airport or just flag one down in Bangkok.

There are many reasons why someone would vacation in Pattaya though most stay there as a weekend side trip from the main tourist city of Bangkok . But the main reason why hordes of visitors come to Pattaya is to witness and partake in the raucous nightlife that presents itself like a buffet to ravenous survivors on a deserted island. And there are other reasons to visit Pattaya such as for the close proximity to Pattaya's beaches. Though Pattaya officials are trying to clean up the pollution on their beaches I highly suggest that you take a tour to the outer islands like Ko Lan. Ko Lan is a 45 minute boat ride away and the island is a paradise for swimmers as Pattaya's main beaches might not have ideal conditions suited for snorkeling and scuba diving. But it will certainly do just fine for a bit of splashing around and water sports.

The most popular question asked is when is the best time to visit Pattaya. October to February is ideal because the heat and humidity is bearable. But this also means that you will be paying more for accommodations as those months  fall within the high season. So book ahead to get the rooms you want. During the low season you will experience heat and humidity that will certainly make your holiday uncomfortable. Rain will happen in Thailand regardless of the season, but the showers do not last too long.

You will know when you have arrived in the city of Pattaya when you see streets lined with go-go bars, snooker clubs, bars, pubs and clubs. You will certainly know you're there when women pull you this way and that way towards the establishments they work in.  It is a sight that you can't miss especially when the neon lights illuminate the sky and the scantily clad women light up the streets. This is certainly no place for kids but it is not an uncommon sight to see Thai children with their parents walking hand in hand gawking at all the tourist. However you will see often western families wandering around the red light districts with parents covering their children's eyes.

The great thing about Pattaya's assortment of accommodation is that you can be decently far away from all the nightlife scenes or you can be exactly right in the middle of all the action. And what ever budget you can afford, there is no doubt you will find an accommodation that is suited to your pocket book and life style. The general rule of thumb is the more secluded the accommodation is the more expensive the rates will be. There are two main stretch of beaches in Pattaya.  Pattaya Bay which is the largest and most crowded and Jomtien Beach which offers a little bit of seclusion. So keep this in mind when you choose a hotel in Pattaya whether or not you want to deal with the noise or over crowding.

Now, if you are going to Pattaya only to enjoy and experience the nightlife, then you should stay anywhere near or adjacent to Walking Street. You cannot miss this street because this is the major tourist attraction hub. This seedy street is filled with plenty of  outdoor bars, indoor bars, beer bars with Muay Thai matches, disco clubs and a smattering of massage parlors catering to men. Whatever your intentions are of visiting Pattaya you will surely find it on Walking Street. One word of warning though, Walking street can be too noisy and if you don't mind being harassed by Thai transsexuals called lady-boys or drunken tourist then you might want to book your accommodations just a little bit away from there as it can get quite rowdy.

Are you into water sports but don't want to pay big bucks to stay in all inclusive resorts? Kayaks and Jet Skis can be rented on the beach for a very decent price. You can even get an affordable body massage on the beach just a few feet away from the rolling waves. The great thing about vacationing in Pattaya and Thailand overall is that a small budget can go a long way. Beer and food can be had at a very cheap price thanks to the favorable exchange rates.

Pattaya started out as a little fishing village and today it is ending up as a major tourist destination with big name hotels that are standing should to shoulder with mom and pop operations. Rumors of corporate big wigs are trying to move in to spruce up the value of Pattaya. But they will never succeed. Pattaya will always remain one of the best places to party and its unique essence and charm can never be changed.

King Tut on Tour

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the world's most popular historic figures has hit the headlines once again. King Tut, the infamous boy king, is proving that you don't have to be alive to be talked about - in fact you don't have to have been living for the past couple millenniums! Over the past forty years he has been the topic of much historic gossip, and earlier this month was no exception.

After decades of speculation, scientists have finally revealed the cause of King Tut's death. The theories of murder and scandal have all gone out the window and it appears that the king died of complications from a broken leg aggravated by malaria. It may not be the most exciting revelation ever, but it couldn't have come at a better time as the latest exhibition of King Tut's belongings tours North America.

The King Tut Exhibition of the 1970s was the most popular museum exhibit to date - but this new exhibit, 'King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs', hopes to rival that. With stops in San Francisco, Denver, Toronto and New York, the exhibit promises to be a great draw for tourists. It includes an outstanding array of Tutankhamen's burial objects. In addition to 50 objects straight from Tut's tomb, there is an array of other Egyptian artifacts from the 18th Dynasty. This 'Golden Age' of Egypt spanned one hundred years and produced some of history's most impressive antiquities. The exhibition also features new forensic studies of King Tut's mummy. The cause of his death is explored from CT scans and visitors can also look the king in the eye - or rather that of a life-sized bust created by forensic specialists.

'Tut Mania' first began in 1972, where the exhibition was first held at the British Museum, and it was a huge success, with people queuing for over eight hours just to see King Tut and his treasures. Since then, Tut Mania remains ever present with visitors already tallying around 4 million. The new exhibit features iconic pieces as well as never-before-seen objects. It's definitely worth a trip even if you aren't located in one of the cities on the tour.

This Egyptian king of mystery has become one of history's most talked about characters. With all the grandeur and mystery surrounding his life and death, it's hard not to be intrigued by the life and times of the boy king.

Marriage in Thailand - Ceremony & Registration

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Marriage in Thailand consists of two distinct parts: the wedding ceremony and the marriage registration.

Wedding Ceremony

The ceremonial part of a Thai marriage begins with the giving of the "Sinsod." "Sinsod" is the practice of paying dowry in Thailand. It is a symbolic act that shows not only the groom's respect for his bride's family but also his financial and capabilities.

Buddhist rituals also characterize traditional Thai marriages. In weddings presided by Buddhist monks, prayers are said and food are presented to Buddha images to ask for abundant blessings for the new couple.

Lately, western traditions have found their way into Thai marriages. In cities like Bangkok, families now find themselves fusing tradition and modern ceremonies in celebrating marriages.

Marriage Registration

The marriage registration at the local register (known as the amphur, amphoe or khet) is the legal aspect in a Thai marriage. It is actually the marriage registration, not the wedding ceremony, which marks the legal start of the marriage. This is also the reason why some practical couples opt to have the marriage registration alone, without having to go through a ceremony, to signal the start of their lives together.

Conditions of Marriage

A. Both parties must at least be 17 years old. If one or both parties are minors, the parents must first express their consent to the marriage. The court may issue an order allowing persons below 17 to enter into marriage, but only under special circumstances.
B. Both parties must not be adjudged as insane or incompetent.
C. The parties must not be blood related in the direct ascending or descending line, or be brothers or sisters in full or half blood. The said relationship shall be in accordance with blood relation, without regard to its legitimacy.
D. An adopter cannot marry the adopted.
E. Both parties must be free from any subsisting marital bond.

Special requirements for Thai widows and divorcees:

Widows and divorcees may only enter into another marriage 310 days after their husband's death or after the termination of the divorce proceedings, except if:

A. a child is born during such period;
B. the divorced couple remarry;
C. a certificate is issued by a qualified doctor stating that the woman is not pregnant; or
D. there is a court order allowing the woman to remarry.

Required documents for Thai nationals:

A. Identification papers (Thai National ID)
B. Certificate of house registration
C. In cases where the individual is a widow or divorcee, proof of the spouse's death and/or the divorce certificate

Required documents for foreigners
A. Clear copies of the passport and arrival card
B. Eligibility to marry or certification of the foreigner's status
C. Translated copies of the eligibility to marry
D. Proof of death and/or divorce of the former spouse if the foreigner is a widow/er or divorcee

An Additional note to Consider:

While everyone would wish for a lifelong marriage, the reality of a divorce is no longer a fictional concept. This is especially true for mixed marriages, or marriages between a local and a farang (foreigner).

It is always a good decision for marrying couples enter into a prenuptial agreement before they register their marriage in Thailand. Asset distribution and spousal support, which are focal issues in divorces, no longer need to be an additional burden during that very difficult period.

Thailand requires a prenuptial agreement to be in writing, signed by both spouses and by at least two witnesses and entered into the Marriage Register at the time of the registration of the marriage.
