You have heard of American Idol, well now meet American Golden Idol. This is a talent show that takes place at the Capitol Theater the third Saturday in May and features Seniors who want to entertain the crowds. Cleveland seniors ages 55 and older are welcome to enter this competition that is on its third year in the city.

American Day

This is a unique celebration that takes place in the Progressive Park that celebrates not only Flag Day, but the birthday of the US Army as well as is intended as a celebration for all of those who became nationalized citizens in that year. This holiday takes place the second weekend in June of every year and commemorates with Flag Day.

Independence Day

July 4th is a special day in Cleveland as it is throughout the United States. There is a large parade as well as fireworks displays, food vendors and carnivals to celebrate the independence of the United States. Anyone who lives in Cleveland or who wants to celebrate this special day can join in the fun.

Puerto Rican Parade

The third Saturday of July spells the Puerto Rican Parade. Cleveland is home to many of those of Puerto Rican descent and dance, music and entertainment is all part of the lavish Puerto Rican Day celebration that takes place in the form of this parade every year.

Labor Day Parade

The end of summer features another fun parade down the streets of downtown Cleveland. The Labor Day Parade is for both young and old alike - anyone can enter to be part of the fun. Patriot Day Remembrance Day

Marriage in Thailand consists of two distinct parts: the wedding ceremony and the marriage registration.

Wedding Ceremony

The ceremonial part of a Thai marriage begins with the giving of the "Sinsod." "Sinsod" is the practice of paying dowry in Thailand. It is a symbolic act that shows not only the groom's respect for his bride's family but also his financial and capabilities.

Buddhist rituals also characterize traditional Thai marriages. In weddings presided by Buddhist monks, prayers are said and food are presented to Buddha images to ask for abundant blessings for the new couple.

Lately, western traditions have found their way into Thai marriages. In cities like Bangkok, families now find themselves fusing tradition and modern ceremonies in celebrating marriages.

Marriage Registration

The marriage registration at the local register (known as the amphur, amphoe or khet) is the legal aspect in a Thai marriage. It is actually the marriage registration, not the wedding ceremony, which marks the legal start of the marriage. This is also the reason why some practical couples opt to have the marriage registration alone, without having to go through a ceremony, to signal the start of their lives together.

Conditions of Marriage

A. Both parties must at least be 17 years old. If one or both parties are minors, the parents must first express their consent to the marriage. The court may issue an order allowing persons below 17 to enter into marriage, but only under special circumstances.
B. Both parties must not be adjudged as insane or incompetent.
C. The parties must not be blood related in the direct ascending or descending line, or be brothers or sisters in full or half blood. The said relationship shall be in accordance with blood relation, without regard to its legitimacy.
D. An adopter cannot marry the adopted.
E. Both parties must be free from any subsisting marital bond.

Special requirements for Thai widows and divorcees:

Widows and divorcees may only enter into another marriage 310 days after their husband's death or after the termination of the divorce proceedings, except if:

A. a child is born during such period;
B. the divorced couple remarry;
C. a certificate is issued by a qualified doctor stating that the woman is not pregnant; or
D. there is a court order allowing the woman to remarry.

Required documents for Thai nationals:

A. Identification papers (Thai National ID)
B. Certificate of house registration
C. In cases where the individual is a widow or divorcee, proof of the spouse's death and/or the divorce certificate

Required documents for foreigners
A. Clear copies of the passport and arrival card
B. Eligibility to marry or certification of the foreigner's status
C. Translated copies of the eligibility to marry
D. Proof of death and/or divorce of the former spouse if the foreigner is a widow/er or divorcee

An Additional note to Consider:

While everyone would wish for a lifelong marriage, the reality of a divorce is no longer a fictional concept. This is especially true for mixed marriages, or marriages between a local and a farang (foreigner).

It is always a good decision for marrying couples enter into a prenuptial agreement before they register their marriage in Thailand. Asset distribution and spousal support, which are focal issues in divorces, no longer need to be an additional burden during that very difficult period.

Thailand requires a prenuptial agreement to be in writing, signed by both spouses and by at least two witnesses and entered into the Marriage Register at the time of the registration of the marriage.

A while back now I went away with my girl-friend to the south west of England where all you can see is the country side.

It was meant to be a relaxing time away from all the stress at work and to get some time together. We stayed in a place called Glastonbury which has a few historical places. These places include the Glastonbury Tor and the Glastonbury Abbey.

We stayed in a 4 star self catering log cabin on the outskirts of town right in the country side. There were 7 of these self catering lodges, which like I have said were situated in the heart of Somerset near Glastonbury and Wells. The place was surrounded with 10 acres of open countryside which offers you the ideal surroundings to relax and unwind which is exactly what we wanted to do, with unparalleled views of Glastonbury Tor.

We were luckily enough to catch the wildlife (the good animals) which surrounds the log cabins. We saw a few deer and a variety of birds.

The log cabins were traditional Scandinavian log cabins which were warm, properly furnished and fully equipped with everything required and everything was clean.

At this moment in time we don't have any children but this place offers a large area in which they can play games whilst you can relax and keep them in view.

The Lodges were ideally situated for visiting many main attractions around somerset like Wells, Glastonbury and Cheddar Gorge.

The local pubs around Glastonbury were very good and friendly. The food was best in the Market House situated at the bottom of town but all the other pubs served fine food as long as they did drink.

So after this basic review of Glastonbury and where I stayed, I have come away with a very good impression of the place and the surrounding area. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to get away and relax.

The name Ourzazate sounds more like a semi-precious gemstone than a garrison town, but in the 1920's this town was an important military base for the French Foreign Legion. From the top of Ait Benhaddou you can expect to take in breathtaking views of the local scenery including the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and the old arena which was used during the filming of 'Gladiator'.

Whilst Ait Benhaddou may be breathtaking, make sure that you also visit Kasbah Taourirt whilst on your luxury holiday in Morocco. The Kasbah is the largest in the region and a former El Glaoui Palace. During the 1930s the El Glaoui clan controlled one of the major caravan routes to West Africa and were given power by the French in exchange for keeping the Southern tribes subdued.

Kasbah Taourirt is located at a strategic point on the caravan route and the Kasbah has close to 300 rooms with 20 individual riads located inside. Visitors can take a tour and see the former kitchens and harem area whilst the main courtyard offers stunning scenes of the High Atlas.

Get to know Pattaya before you rent an apartment in Pattaya for long term. Rent a Motorbike or scooter and explore Pattaya for a few days if you are new to Pattaya. Visit as many areas as you can. You will see which areas you like and which areas fit your budget if you are on a budget.

Most Apartment complexes won't rent to you for less than 3 - 6 months during high season. You want to make sure you like the area that you will be living in. There are as many apartments in Pattaya as there are grains of sand on the beaches in Pattaya.

You will find very large apartment complexes with hundreds of apartments and you will find smaller buildings with 10, 20 or 30 units. You will see so-called serviced apartments which mean nothing more than "ready to move in".

Bring a notepad along and take notes of the areas you like most. Stop by apartment complexes and find the owner, manager or management office. The manager will most likely speak some English.

Talk to tenants and find out if they like living there and if they know about issues, if any. Once you found and narrowed down on an apartment, visit the apartment and area during different times of the day and night. This is important! This is Thailand. You don't want to find out about bars that stay open all night right on your doorstep after you paid your rent and your deposit.

Standard deposit is usually one month rent, but it may be a little bit more than that if there will be a cleaning fee when you move out. Rents vary from as little as 3,500 Baht to 10's of thousands a month depending on size, location, furniture, whether it has a kitchen or not and much more.

Apartments for less than 3500 Baht a month may not be suitable for most westerners. I have seen very nice and clean apartments for 3,500 Baht and I have seen not so nice ones for 10,000 Baht. For 10,000 Baht a month you should be able to rent a very nice 1 room studio style Apartment with a good kitchen and nice furniture.

Understand how much you will be paying for water and electricity. I have heard of low rents but extremely high charges for water and power. Make sure you write down the water and power reading when you move in. Get a copy of the apartment rules if one is available.

Other Things To Consider :

Check that the power works including light fixtures
Check there is water in kitchen, bath, and shower
Do you need Air Conditioning?
Do the windows have screens?
Is there safe parking?
Make your list...

Pattaya is not your normal kind of city. It is a party town in many areas and when you choose to rent an apartment you may want to check out the vicinity during daytime and nighttime. Are there any bars close by? Bars can be fun for someone coming to visit Pattaya for a short time. Bars may not be so much fun if you have one in your backyard. Bars in Pattaya oftentimes stay open 24/7.

I have been traveling to Thailand since 1973 and I am currently retired here. I have gone through the new airport numerous times, both international and domestic, since it opened in 2006. Follow these tips and you will breeze through Bangkok's International Airport.

The first steps take place prior to landing while you are still on the airplane. Hopefully you are close to the front of the airplane or you will have to outrace hundreds of other passengers to Immigration.

Ensure that you use the bathroom just prior to landing and have properly filled out the embarkation card that the flight attendant gave you. Stick the card in your passport and keep it handy. Listen to the pre-landing announcement as the flight attendant may announce which carousel your luggage will be on.

Upon landing, once the seat belt sign goes off, get up and grab your carry-on bag and get ready to move.

When you leave the plane, look for the "Immigration" sign and speed walk in that direction. Do not stop for anything; no bathroom, no smoke break, and no currency exchange.

Walk as fast as you can and pass as many other passengers as possible. Remember you will be competing to be first in line at Immigration with your fellow passengers and any other planes that landed at approximately the same time.

Once you reach Immigration find the shortest line and have your passport and embarkation card ready to show. The Immigration officer will check your passport and any visa you may have, staple your embarkation card to your passport, and stamp you in to the country.

Immediately after you get your passport stamped, check the display board to see which carousel your luggage is on. This is very important as there are about 50 carousels. Again, speed walk to the carousel.

If you have a lot of luggage, grab one of the free carts that are located by every carousel.

Once you have your luggage, head for the "Nothing to Declare" exit and ignore the girls that are trying to get you a taxi.

Once you depart the luggage area, look to see what numbered section you are in. The numbers are large and displayed on the walls. You want to head for Area 3, better known as Meeting Place 3. If you need to exchange some currency, now is the time to do it. Walk through the gauntlet of people and, again, ignore those trying to get you a taxi.

Take the down escalator and this will bring you outside and to the official airport taxi area. There are about 8 lines you can get in to get your taxi. Tell the girl where you are going and get in your taxi to your hotel. This service costs an extra 50 baht (about $1.50 USD) but gives you a bit more security than just getting a taxi that just dropped off a departing tourist. This will also ensure that the driver uses his meter.

Tell the taxi driver you want to take the tollway. This will cost you an additional 65 baht (about $2.00 USD) and most of the time the driver pays it and you reimburse when you get to the hotel. Do not forget to add the toll and the 50 baht service charge to whatever is on the meter.

These tips should get you through the airport from landing to taxi in less than 30 minutes as long as your luggage is not delayed. Hopefully this makes your arrival in Thailand after a long flight a little easier.

When you visit New York City and want to visit the Statue of Liberty, there may be many places where you can get the tickets. However, there is only one official location for Statue of Liberty tickets and that is at Statue Cruises. This is the official ticketing center for visits to both the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and the Statue of Liberty itself. In order to reach both of these locations you have to take a ferry ride, which is why having the tickets in advance is of utmost importance.

You can only use this ticket once and it is only valid for three days from the date of purchase. You do need to arrive early to ensure that you will get to take the cruise.

It is important to be aware of the ferry schedule for these tours so that you won't have to wait in a long line or miss your scheduled trip. Depending on which cruise you choose, you also have to allow for specific period of time. If you want to see both monuments and spend time exploring the interiors, you should allow for a full day. The tour itself takes about 5.5 hours and this does not include the time you spend at the terminal in the park or the length of time it takes you to reach the terminal.

There are concession stands at both locations where you can purchase food and rink for the duration of your visit. Many visitors, however, choose to bring a packed lunch with them because of the long lines of people at these concession stands. Are you looking for info on the "Go Oahu" Pass? As far as I know, there is no such thing, however, there is a 'Go Oahu Card', a 'Custom Oahu Explorer Pass', and a Honolulu Power Pass. Here's what I know about them.

The Go Oahu Card is quite popular. It's been around for a few years. I've used it. I think it saves money for very active vacationers. It can cost quite a bit of money initially but promises to save up to 55% over regular prices (if you just showed up and paid for your activity on site).

How it works is, you buy a card for a pre-determined number of days. On any day that you use the card you just show up at your activity and show them the card and you get in with no cost. In order to maximize the value of the card you want to try to do as many activities as possible on each day you use the card.

In my experience, doing 3 or more activities each day is best.

The Custom Oahu Explorer pass is a bit different. Instead, you pick the activities you do, prepay for all of them, and the more activities you do, the more money you save overall. Then, you can take as long as you want during your vacation to do each activity.

I haven't used the Honolulu Power pass, but it seems to be very similar to the Go Oahu Card. The prices are a bit less sometimes, but in my opinion, the available activities also cost a little less than the ones available with the Go Oahu card, so it makes sense.

So, my recommendation is to pick whichever one meets your needs the most. I personally am partial to the Go Oahu Card if you are really active, and the custom explorer pass if you are not so active.

A curious choice of driving lines was clearly in evidence throughout the race and they certainly kept the crowd thoroughly entertained. For the record Nana (Mitsubishi Triton) won the race 6.732 seconds ahead of Jarat (Chevrolet Colorado) with Yut in another Triton taking the last step on the podium.

Mai Pen Rai Means Never Mind - A Personal Look at the Thai Culture

In 1995, while living in the US, I was offered a really great job in Thailand. My vision of Thailand was exotic and wild, with jungles, beaches and temples, but at the same time, I didn't know anything about the culture or the people.

As part of the preparations for the move, the company gave me the book "Mai Pen Rai means Never Mind" by Carol Hollinger. The subtitle of the book was "An American housewife's honest love affair with the irrepressible people of Thailand". I started reading it, but didn't get into it right away, and then decided it'd be better if I formed my own opinion and left the book alone.

I've just finished reading it, 10 years after leaving Thailand, and I absolutely enjoyed every minute.

Carol Hollinger came to Thailand with her husband, following his work, but decided to go out and do her own thing. She secured a job as a lecturer at the best university in Thailand and immersed herself in as much contact with the Thai people as she could.

She was lucky to be in a position to meet some influential Thai people, as well as some key foreigners, who all made her experience deeper and more meaningful than most people have, but at every turn, she took opportunities, no matter how strange, to get up close and personal with the land, the animals, the people, the history, the food, the buildings and whatever else she could find. She was not deterred by weather, fatigue, illness or language barriers. She waded or dove into murky water, ate and drank what she was given, talked with her hands and face, listened with her eyes and heart and felt loved and respected by the Thai everywhere for it.

The language in the book shows off the writer's knowledge of fancy words and the books she'd read, which may put the reader down a bit, but the love for the Thai people and their personable culture is still clearly communicated.

It takes courage to let go of conventions and simply enjoy yourself. Carol Hollinger not only enjoyed herself in Thailand, having let go of her Americanism, but seemed to relish every moment of writing this excellent book. I found myself smiling to my self many times, as I was reading about how uptight foreigners were about some of the Thai antics, while "Acharn" Hollinger looked on and giggled on the inside. Many of these episodes resembled my own experience in Thailand and elsewhere.

"Mai Pen Rai" is highly recommended if you're planning to go to Thailand. If you're not, it still makes interesting reading and may spark in you the urge to visit Thailand and meet these wonderful people from the land of smiles.

The books in the series including "A Fool In Paradise" "The Fool is Back" and "A Fools Diary" are a collage of short stories about the sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic antics of what many of the male visitors to Thailand have experienced in their dealings with these lovely creatures, and are a MUST READ for all who wish to cast fate to the wind to enjoy the pleasures offered by these delectable ladies.

In reading the books I realized that while the books are truly a great introduction to life in "SIN CITY" they also teach something of the culture of this beautiful country and it's equally beautiful people.

Thailand is steeped in Buddhism which becomes obvious to the first time visitor on arrival by the number of Monks seen daily almost everywhere in the streets and the amount of "Wats" (Monasteries) sprinkled through out the country.

Like all countries which have a dominant religion, many of the Thais are willing to "bend the rules" somewhat in order to be able to survive in a country which has no dole queues or free handouts from the government as many of the Western societies have.

They are also extremely family orientated. Most of the bar ladies are supporting at least one child and quite often a Thai husband.

It's the Thai girl's duty to support her parents financially and who, quite often will be raising the lady's child or children in a village somewhere in the North or South of the country.

While the North West is dominated by Chiang Mai, the North East also boasts several big cities including Udon Thani and Kon Kaen which has one the largest universities in the country.

Chiang Mai is the cultural centre where much of the "arts and crafts" seen being sold in the many markets found in every major city are manufactured and is also the area in which much of the countries fruit and vegetables are grown

The North West is often called Issarn and the predominant language spoken is actually a version of Lao. It becomes confusing to the traveler who has taken the time to learn a few words of Thai, when his new found love meets a friend or family member and starts to speak a totally different language.

However ninety percent of the girls in Pattaya can speak sufficient English for the tourist to be able to enjoy a very pleasant interlude with them and indeed many tourists find themselves married to a Thai lady and raising a family.

In the "Money Number One"series Neil also offers the reader an insight into some of the customs practiced by these people who we of the west tend to find very strange indeed and are often in complete contrast to our Christian upbringing and can sometimes be seen as even repugnant to some.

Neil Hutchinson has written the books from his own experiences and those of others who have visited Pattaya, however the same principals apply to all the areas of Thailand which supports beer bars ,go-go bars etc and even some that don't.

One is to go on a guided tour on one of the off-road buses that will take a group around the island for a few hours, stopping at a few of the main hot-spots. Better, yet, if you are a keen driver then you can rent out your own four by four and explore the island at your own leisure.
