Top 10 National Parks of Thailand

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Thailand encompasses an array of national parks and wonderful landscapes that go from the mountainous north right down to the myriad islands in the Thai Gulf and Andaman region. There are 79 national parks in all, covering all areas of the country and although fees for foreigners are steep, most people are blown away by the beauty.

1. Khao Yai National Park

One of Thailand's very best, Khao Yai National Park is massive and resides to the northeast of Bangkok. It is the country's oldest national park and comes with 500kms of hiking trails, huge waterfalls, pristine forest and around 300 species of birds alone. Elephants and tigers are among the big animals here.

2. Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand's most visited. Despite its remote nature it is wholly accessible by bus on the slow road between Surat Thani and Phuket. Khao Sok has a whacking great lake in the middle, stretching for over 50kms across, which supports vast numbers of fish and ecosystems. There are deep caves connected to the lake that are viewable outside of the wet season.

Elsewhere in the park is some good trekking from the headquarters and a pretty gorge to swim in. Keep an eye out for wildlife if you go for an extended trek. You are unlikely going to see tigers, yet there are all sorts of wonderful creatures to spot. A number of well done guesthouse operations are at the park entrance.

3. Phang Nga Bay National Park

Phang Nga Bay National Park is one of the most beautiful places in the world for lovers of water and islands. It has a stark karst land and seascape, which features hue pillars poking up out of the ground and water. There are caves, traditional villages and lush foliage galore here and it is only 100kms from Phuket Town. The kayaking in Phang Nga Bay National Park is particularly good.

4. Ang Thong National Marine Park

Ang Thong is a dreamy archipelago between Koh Samui and Surat Thani. It is rarely visited on the order of Thailand's main parks due to the general inaccessibility. Tours from Samui are popular and often incorporate kayaking around the many bays. You can trek to the top of some of the islands and also camp out near the park headquarters.

5. Erawan National Park

Kanchanaburi's most famous park features the stunning Erawan Falls, a huge cascade of water over seven tiers down 1,500m. Visitors can swim in the pools as well as walk up the trail which skirts the falls. The rest of the park has good walking and a collection of caves, including Phrathat Cave. This park gets really busy during holidays.

7. Doi Inthanon National Park

Thailand's highest national park reaches a point of over 2,560m above sea level. The mountain itself is fairly unremarkable on its peak, however, as you can only go so far due to the research station there. On the drive up the mountain are the King and Queen's stupas, while on the flanks are huge waterfalls and a degree of accommodation.

Lesser Visited Thai National Parks

8. Mu Koh Surin

Often referred to as simply Surin National Park, this northern park straddles the Thai/Burma border down on the Andaman Sea. Most of the park's territory covers the sea where there are five main islands, including North Island, South Island and three smaller ones. The snorkeling here is superb.

9. Tarutao

This largely unseen area of Thailand resides right down in the south and up against Malay territory. It encompasses dozens of islands in Satun province and includes the busiest island, Koh Lipe. You can also stay on Koh Tarutao and Koh Adang. The snorkeling, amazing sunsets and quietness are the big deal here.

10. Ko Samet

Although Koh Samet is a high profile place that sees a huge number of tourists, most come here for the beaches and not for its marine park status. It sits down in Rayong province, not far south of rowdy Pattaya, and is accessible by ferry only. Koh Samet is only a few kilometers long but is pretty rugged. It sports amazing coral and beaches that are incredibly white and the driest climate in the country.

Park Fees

Most parks charge fees to enter and sometimes as much as 400 baht for the higher profile ones. It may not sound much, but considering most Thais only earn 200 baht a day and also only have to pay 20 baht to get in, it is.

Where to Stay in Pattaya Thailand

Pattaya Thailand is located on the southern coast of Thailand. Just a few hours away from Bangkok by taxi and it is as easily accessible by taxi from Suvarnabhumi airport. The taxi drivers will charge you a flat fee of 1500THB to 2000THB which is roughly $45US to $60US. If you can speak a little bit of Thai than you will have a good chance of bargaining the price down. Taxis can be found at the airport or just flag one down in Bangkok.

There are many reasons why someone would vacation in Pattaya though most stay there as a weekend side trip from the main tourist city of Bangkok . But the main reason why hordes of visitors come to Pattaya is to witness and partake in the raucous nightlife that presents itself like a buffet to ravenous survivors on a deserted island. And there are other reasons to visit Pattaya such as for the close proximity to Pattaya's beaches. Though Pattaya officials are trying to clean up the pollution on their beaches I highly suggest that you take a tour to the outer islands like Ko Lan. Ko Lan is a 45 minute boat ride away and the island is a paradise for swimmers as Pattaya's main beaches might not have ideal conditions suited for snorkeling and scuba diving. But it will certainly do just fine for a bit of splashing around and water sports.

The most popular question asked is when is the best time to visit Pattaya. October to February is ideal because the heat and humidity is bearable. But this also means that you will be paying more for accommodations as those months  fall within the high season. So book ahead to get the rooms you want. During the low season you will experience heat and humidity that will certainly make your holiday uncomfortable. Rain will happen in Thailand regardless of the season, but the showers do not last too long.

You will know when you have arrived in the city of Pattaya when you see streets lined with go-go bars, snooker clubs, bars, pubs and clubs. You will certainly know you're there when women pull you this way and that way towards the establishments they work in.  It is a sight that you can't miss especially when the neon lights illuminate the sky and the scantily clad women light up the streets. This is certainly no place for kids but it is not an uncommon sight to see Thai children with their parents walking hand in hand gawking at all the tourist. However you will see often western families wandering around the red light districts with parents covering their children's eyes.

The great thing about Pattaya's assortment of accommodation is that you can be decently far away from all the nightlife scenes or you can be exactly right in the middle of all the action. And what ever budget you can afford, there is no doubt you will find an accommodation that is suited to your pocket book and life style. The general rule of thumb is the more secluded the accommodation is the more expensive the rates will be. There are two main stretch of beaches in Pattaya.  Pattaya Bay which is the largest and most crowded and Jomtien Beach which offers a little bit of seclusion. So keep this in mind when you choose a hotel in Pattaya whether or not you want to deal with the noise or over crowding.

Now, if you are going to Pattaya only to enjoy and experience the nightlife, then you should stay anywhere near or adjacent to Walking Street. You cannot miss this street because this is the major tourist attraction hub. This seedy street is filled with plenty of  outdoor bars, indoor bars, beer bars with Muay Thai matches, disco clubs and a smattering of massage parlors catering to men. Whatever your intentions are of visiting Pattaya you will surely find it on Walking Street. One word of warning though, Walking street can be too noisy and if you don't mind being harassed by Thai transsexuals called lady-boys or drunken tourist then you might want to book your accommodations just a little bit away from there as it can get quite rowdy.

Are you into water sports but don't want to pay big bucks to stay in all inclusive resorts? Kayaks and Jet Skis can be rented on the beach for a very decent price. You can even get an affordable body massage on the beach just a few feet away from the rolling waves. The great thing about vacationing in Pattaya and Thailand overall is that a small budget can go a long way. Beer and food can be had at a very cheap price thanks to the favorable exchange rates.

Pattaya started out as a little fishing village and today it is ending up as a major tourist destination with big name hotels that are standing should to shoulder with mom and pop operations. Rumors of corporate big wigs are trying to move in to spruce up the value of Pattaya. But they will never succeed. Pattaya will always remain one of the best places to party and its unique essence and charm can never be changed.

Marriage in Thailand - Ceremony & Registration

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Marriage in Thailand consists of two distinct parts: the wedding ceremony and the marriage registration.

Wedding Ceremony

The ceremonial part of a Thai marriage begins with the giving of the "Sinsod." "Sinsod" is the practice of paying dowry in Thailand. It is a symbolic act that shows not only the groom's respect for his bride's family but also his financial and capabilities.

Buddhist rituals also characterize traditional Thai marriages. In weddings presided by Buddhist monks, prayers are said and food are presented to Buddha images to ask for abundant blessings for the new couple.

Lately, western traditions have found their way into Thai marriages. In cities like Bangkok, families now find themselves fusing tradition and modern ceremonies in celebrating marriages.

Marriage Registration

The marriage registration at the local register (known as the amphur, amphoe or khet) is the legal aspect in a Thai marriage. It is actually the marriage registration, not the wedding ceremony, which marks the legal start of the marriage. This is also the reason why some practical couples opt to have the marriage registration alone, without having to go through a ceremony, to signal the start of their lives together.

Conditions of Marriage

A. Both parties must at least be 17 years old. If one or both parties are minors, the parents must first express their consent to the marriage. The court may issue an order allowing persons below 17 to enter into marriage, but only under special circumstances.
B. Both parties must not be adjudged as insane or incompetent.
C. The parties must not be blood related in the direct ascending or descending line, or be brothers or sisters in full or half blood. The said relationship shall be in accordance with blood relation, without regard to its legitimacy.
D. An adopter cannot marry the adopted.
E. Both parties must be free from any subsisting marital bond.

Special requirements for Thai widows and divorcees:

Widows and divorcees may only enter into another marriage 310 days after their husband's death or after the termination of the divorce proceedings, except if:

A. a child is born during such period;
B. the divorced couple remarry;
C. a certificate is issued by a qualified doctor stating that the woman is not pregnant; or
D. there is a court order allowing the woman to remarry.

Required documents for Thai nationals:

A. Identification papers (Thai National ID)
B. Certificate of house registration
C. In cases where the individual is a widow or divorcee, proof of the spouse's death and/or the divorce certificate

Required documents for foreigners
A. Clear copies of the passport and arrival card
B. Eligibility to marry or certification of the foreigner's status
C. Translated copies of the eligibility to marry
D. Proof of death and/or divorce of the former spouse if the foreigner is a widow/er or divorcee

An Additional note to Consider:

While everyone would wish for a lifelong marriage, the reality of a divorce is no longer a fictional concept. This is especially true for mixed marriages, or marriages between a local and a farang (foreigner).

It is always a good decision for marrying couples enter into a prenuptial agreement before they register their marriage in Thailand. Asset distribution and spousal support, which are focal issues in divorces, no longer need to be an additional burden during that very difficult period.

Thailand requires a prenuptial agreement to be in writing, signed by both spouses and by at least two witnesses and entered into the Marriage Register at the time of the registration of the marriage.

How to Find a Good Lawyer in Pattaya, Thailand

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Pattaya is a city on the North Gulf Coast of Eastern Thailand which attracts millions of tourist every year. Its name was originally "Thap Phraya" that stands for Army of the Phraya. Initially, the place was just a fishing village until the year 1961 when American servicemen began going there for relaxation. This dawned the Pattaya tourist industry that continually developed up until the present.

Pattaya authorities strictly monitor observance of Thai national laws and its own set of local rules and regulations. To avoid conflict with the Thai government business and property laws, many foreigners will hire a Pattaya lawyer to do the legal groundwork for them such us due diligence of the intended business purchase or registration, preparing the documentation for licensing and dealing with concerned Thai officials. Foreigners also hire a Pattaya attorney to conduct a title search before purchasing property or real estate in Thailand. Such steps are very sensible and practical, especially to foreigners who are not acquainted with the Thai laws.

A good lawyer in Pattaya can commonly be found in an older and well established law firm. A law firm is typically comprised of licensed Thailand lawyers who have joined an established firm in Pattaya to engage in the practice of law. Each lawyer will be specialized in a field practice such as Thailand Divorce, Thailand Company Registration & Corporate matters, and Pattaya Immigration and Work Permit. This structure enables the group to handle almost all type of cases brought to them by clients.

The best Thailand law firms in Pattaya can conveniently be sourced through the internet. Most popular and established law offices do the advertising of their legal services and their office locations on their legal websites. Moreover, these international law firms in Pattaya offer free consultations through emails and chat.

Small law firms are also available, however, the extent of services they render rarely match the leading international firms. A Pattaya lawyer in big law firms may cost you a little more but the quality service provided in return is going to be worth the fee.

Schengen Visa in Thailand

A Schengen Visa allows the holder to freely visit all member nations of the Schengen Agreement. The Schengen Agreement was originally signed between just five countries in Europe. However, since that time the number has grown to 25 member nations including; Austria, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherland, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. By obtaining the most popular and common type of Schengen Visa, Category C, an individual is allowed to stay in any of these nations for 90 days within a period of 6 months. This means that a person can stay up to 90 days in any of these nations and freely move between them without having to obtain different visas for each country. While those 90 days do not have to be consecutive they are only available for the six month period after first entering a Schengen Nation. There a number of different types of Schengen Visas available in Thailand to individuals who complete the necessary application process.

Types of Schengen Visas: There are a number of Schengen Visas available to Thai applicants. The following are a list of the different types of visas offered by member nations. However, Category C is the most common type of visa and is the one recommended to travelers.

· Category A Visa: Some nationals are required to have this visa allowing the individual to travel through the international transit areas of Schengen Nations airports. However, this does not apply to Thai citizens and is most likely not necessary for travelers.

· Category B Visa: This visa allows individuals to single, double or multiple transits to Schengen Nations for a period of 5 days of less.

· Category C Visa: This visa is the most popular type of Schengen visas and provides the individual holder the ability to travel within Schengen Nations without obtaining additional visas. The visa is good for 90 nonconsecutive days. However, those 90 days must be used within six months of the date of first entering a Schengen Nation.

· Category D Visa: This visa is issued by individual Schengen Nation and allows a holder to stay in that country for the length of time provided by that individual nation. The holder of this visa may travel within other Schengen Nations for up to 90 days within the six month period of first arriving.

· Category FTD and FRTD: These visas are only special visas for road and rail lines between Mainland Russia and Kalingrad Oblast which borders the Baltic Sea.

Filing Documents: To complete an application for a Category C Schengen Visa the following documents should be provided:

1. A completed application available online or at Schengen Nations' embassies.

2. A passport and a copy of that passport. The passport must be valid for at least three months after the planned return from Schengen Nations

3. A photograph or photographs of the applicant's face that was taken within six months of applying. The amount of photographs required may vary so it is advisable to have a few available.

4. Proof of medical travel insurance that meets or exceeds €30,000.00

5. Evidence of a stable financial background, such as bank statements, property certificates and similar documents.

6. Documents showing travel arrangements, accommodations and related materials that show that the trip will be temporary.

7. If you are staying at another person's residence in a Schengen Nation it might be necessary to bring an invitation from the individual you are staying with in order to verify your accommodations.

General Process: Once these documents are prepared an individual must complete a brief filing process. First, you must go to the embassy or consulate of the Schengen Nation that you intend to spend the majority of your time in. If that is unknown you could go to the Embassy or consult of the Schengen country you will first arrive in. Second, you must submit the documents listed above to the necessary station and pay the €60 filing fee (approximately THB 3,000.) This is usually the final step, but occasionally an interview will be requested to ask about your visit. A visa will usually be issued within in 4-5 business days after submission; the process can take longer if an interview is required.

Note:

· If the Schengen Nation that you are planning to spend the majority of your time in does not have an embassy or consulate in the country you are residing in you should contact the Schengen Nation that represents the other Nation for purposes of visas.

· Meeting the above requirements and completing the filing process does not guarantee a visa as approval is up to the discretion of the reviewing officer.

Conclusion: Making an application for a Schengen Visa in Thailand is the most convenient and effective way for a Thai national to travel through Europe. It allows an Thai national up to 90 days of travel to all Schengen Nations within a six month period. The visa is truly a 25 nation tourist visa that is provided to an individual who meet minimum requirements and file the appropriate application.

Pattaya, Thailand Retirement!

Yes, you CAN retire on $50USD a day!

Although it may be crass to say, MONEY is everything in this world-by having money, you have the FREEDOM to do most anything you want. You're fortunate to live in the West where you have the opportunity to earn and save sufficient capital to last a lifetime. Even if you don't have a lot, most Western countries' governments will guarantee a monthly income (pension) of around $1,000 (USD) beginning in your early 60s.

And while not much in your home town, it is A LOT in Pattaya, Thailand.

Here's what I mean:

Sample monthly budget based on $50 day-

Housing (including ALL utilities)-$300

Food-$180

Transport-$20

Entertainment-$500

Misc/Everything else-$500

Not bad, eh! 1/3 of your budget is going towards entertainment which is A LOT of SANOOK (fun) in Pattaya!

While our budget of $50 a day exceeds the $1,000 monthly pension mentioned, a little tweaking in the entertainment or miscellaneous categories could bring it in-line. Or, having $100,000 in savings at 6% yields $500 per month thus putting you at the $50 figure.

Note that didn't factor a 'separate' travel fund for the annual trip back to your home country. Inevitably you'll need to back, so ensure you plan for it.

Now if you're too young for a pension, their is hope!

If have around $350,000USD saved, you've hit the mark, assuming a 6% return on your money.

And DON'T be discouraged if you're too young for a pension and short on money--consider 'semi-retirement'.

Make a plan to spend six months or so a year in Pattya, Thailand and the balance working in your home country. This is the 'having your cake and eating it too' strategy!

Go to http://www.retire-to-pattaya-thailand.com for more INSIDER information on retiring to Pattaya, Thailand.

Super Car Thailand 2009, Rd 5 & 6, Bira Circuit, Pattaya, Chonburi - Super Commonrail Pickup race

The best action of the day came in the support categories, the pick-ups providing a never ending stream of clashes, bumps, off track excursions, door closing manoeuvres (maybe that should be tailgate-closing?) and bodywork shedding moments, all to a haze of thick black plumes of exhaust smoke that wouldnt be sanctioned anywhere else. These cars boast rear spoilers perched at the back seemingly in defiance of aerodynamic principles and at least one of these appendages was detached with a bang in the chicane, while one reached the line at full tilt, but with a heavily reshaped three-quarter panel that will give a bodyshop somewhere in Thailand a very busy few days before final round in Bangsaen looms into view. A curious choice of driving lines was clearly in evidence throughout the race and they certainly kept the crowd thoroughly entertained. For the record Nana (Mitsubishi Triton) won the race 6.732 seconds ahead of Jarat (Chevrolet Colorado) with Yut in another Triton taking the last step on the podium.

Thailand Business Visas - Application and Obtainment Issues

The best Thailand visa is usually the one that best suits the applicant's needs. That being said, of all the visa options available to a prospective expat the Thailand Business Visa appears to be the most versatile, which we are going to explore in this piece, in comparison to the other Thai visa options available.

A Thailand visa does not necessarily confer the right to work in Thailand. Time and again, the Thai government has been strict in separating the right to stay in Thailand from the right to work in Thailand. The right to work in Thailand is conferred through a work permit issued by the Department of Employment of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare. Obtaining a Thailand work permit though, is easier said than done. A holder of a Thai Non-Immigrant "O" Dependent or "O-A" Retirement Visa does not have the ability to get a work permit. The Thai government does not issue work permits to those who hold this particular type of visa however for the "O" visa based on marriage is allowed. The Thailand work permit can be obtained if the visa was granted on the basis of business or marriage. A holder of a Thai Education Visa, on the other hand, is also prevented from obtaining a work permit although exceptions can be made to allow the visa holder to work part-time if special permission has been granted (in rare cases) by the Labor Department. The Thailand Business Visa, on the other hand, provides the visa holder the ability to secure a work permit in Thailand upon a successful application.

The Thai Business Visa's validity is also one of its strong points. In comparison to the Tourist Visa, which is valid for a period of sixty days and can be further extended by another thirty days, the Business Visa in Thailand is valid for ninety days and in the case of a one-year multiple-entry visa, this ninety-day period can be repeated numerous times within its one-year validity.

Exploring Thailand

Noted as the land of smiles, Thailand is located in Southeastern Asia, bordering the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, southeast of Burma.
